There is a great story in today's Houston Chronicle about Houstonian, Lisa Modlich, who at 88 years old maintains a fierce competitive spirit in racking up wins in table tennis competitions throughout the world. She practices 2-3 hours per day, including a table tennis coach from Puerto Rico, and the practice has paid off with 115 gold medals and 20 silver on the international circuit. The amazing thing is that Lisa didn't pick up the sport until age 66, when the Houston heat encouraged her to switch from tennis to an indoor sport with air conditioning. She is known for playing with her hair, nails, makeup and jewelry all perfect. When asked why, she replies, "I like gold!". Her heroism dates back to when she was growing up in Austria, helping teach Jews to help them escape the Nazis. She herself escaped to Paris and then later to Houston where she has lived for years.
